We’re thrilled to announce dates for our 4th annual NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar. On July 21-27, 2019, we will invite percussionists to New York University to rehearse and perform along side members of Sandbox Percussion with a culminating performance at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY. Our special guest this year will be percussionist, Ji Hye Jung.
The four of us in Sandbox have been reflecting on what it means for us to be educators in music. We, of course, want to play more right notes and have cleaner double strokes. However, we hope our seminar at NYU will go a bit further. In a world that seems to be more divided every day, it is music that brings people together. Working and performing in a chamber group, we have had the great pleasure of interacting with many different communities from all over the world. When we listen to each other and communicate for a common purpose, we can achieve anything. This is the basis for which Sandbox was founded on – the simple love of playing music together – and we hope we can share that love for music with young percussionists…and, hopefully, improve some double strokes too!
We are also very excited to announce this year that we have 3 scholarships in place for the seminar. Each scholarship will go to one high school student, one undergraduate, and one graduate student. This scholarship will fully cover tuition, housing, and the meal plan. Click HERE to learn more about the seminar and how to apply. Applications officially open in January, so stay tuned!
In other news, we will be performing at PASIC this week with The Percussion Collective. If you haven’t heard, The Percussion Collective is a group of percussionists formulated by our former teacher, Robert van Sice. All members of the ensemble have also studied with Professor van Sice in the past decade. We’ll be performing on Friday night in Sagamore Ballroom at 8:30pm. The evening will be part concert, part epic reunion, so you won’t want to miss it. If you’re at PASIC come on by and say hi afterwards. We would love to hang!
The day after our performance at PASIC we’ll be flying out to Philadelphia to perform on our good friend, Nick DiBerardino’s graduate recital at the Curtis Institute of Music. Nick wrote an incredible piece for two glockenspiels, two vibraphones and ceramic bowls entitled, Gossamer. We’ll be giving our first performance of it on Saturday 11/17 in Field Concert Hall.
Later this month we will join the Michigan State University Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Viet Cuong’s concerto, Re(new)al. We love performing this piece, and are thrilled with the contribution it has made to the percussion repertoire. Also on the program will be Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, so you can come for the old, but stay for the new!
That’s all for now. Happy fall, and we hope to see you soon!
Sincerely,
Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
