This Saturday, March 12th we have the great pleasure of performing one of our favorite pieces of music, Steve Reich’s Drumming at Brooklyn’s nightclub, Verboten. In the summer of 1970 Steve Reich took a trip to Africa to study Ghanaian drumming. He was so inspired by the musical culture and the idea of a community coming together to make music, that he decided to write a piece that reflected this very idea. Drumming is a 70+ minute work for 9 percussionists, two female voices, and piccolo. We will be joined by some of our closest friends from groups such as Mobius Percussion, arx duo, and Triplepoint Trio. Drumming is a celebration of what it means to be a percussionist. From the moment we begin playing we will embark on an epic, rhythmic journey, guiding the audience through a hypnotic sound world. It’s some of the first music we ever learned as a quartet, and we are so excited to perform it in NYC for the first time. Immediately following Drumming will be a Reich : Remixed after-party performed by Leo Leite and the event’s curator, Ricardo Romaneiro. Closing this set will be a performance by our good friend, Dave Molk. This is also a special night at Verboten as it is the club’s 10 year anniversary. Legendary Brazilian producer Gui Boratto will perform live following our show. Tickets to Drumming will also grant you access to this event! On March 20th we will be heading down to Washington D.C. to perform at The Phillips Collection. We’re giving the east coast premiere of David Crowell’s new work, Music for Percussion Quartet. Also on that program will be the Amphion String Quartet performing Andy Akiho’s Ligneous with our own Ian Rosenbaum. Come celebrate the first day of Spring with us! That’s all for now.
