Dear friends,
We are thrilled to announce that our newest album, Don’t Look Down, created in collaboration with Christopher Cerrone and PENTATONE Records, is out now!
This album showcases Chris’s innovative and enchanting works for percussion, featuring pianist Conor Hanick and mezzo-soprano Elspeth Davis, with production by Mike Tierney. A true labor of love and friendship, we couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. Stream or download the album here.
Filmmaker Jonathan Maurer has also created a stunning visual companion to one of Chris’s earlier percussion quartet works, A Natural History of Vacant Lots, featuring dancer Montay Romero. Shot in Altadena just before the fires and edited under evacuation orders, the film brings an unexpected depth to the piece’s themes.
We’re also excited to share that Gramophone is featuring the album’s Ode to Joy as their Video of the Day! Written for us in 2023 for vibraphone, marimba, glockenspiel, and crotales, the work draws inspiration from Frank O’Hara’s poem of the same name, celebrating the vibrancy of New York City. It also marks Chris’s first fully acoustic piece for percussion quartet—though he still keeps us as busy as ever! Thank you to Vic Firth for creating this film with us.
Tonight at 92Y: Honoring Max Roach with Tyshawn Sorey
This evening, we’re honored to join forces with Tyshawn Sorey and his trio—Aaron Diehl (piano) and Harish Raghavan (bass)—to celebrate the legendary percussionist and bandleader Max Roach at the 92nd Street Y. We’ll both perform individual sets, highlighting Roach’s immense influence across musical worlds. To close the night, we’ll take the stage with the Tyshawn Sorey Trio for the New York premiere of Sorey’s Cogitations, a multi-movement, through-composed piece paying tribute to Roach’s groundbreaking M’Boom ensemble.
We have a feeling this will be a truly special concert, and we hope you can join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Max Roach. Find more information and tickets here – either in person or via livestream.
