Spring is here and we have a lot of exciting events coming up soon!
Today, May 1, is the priority deadline for our fourth annual NYU Sandbox Seminar. This summer, July 21-27, we will invite high school and college aged percussionists to NYU in Manhattan to rehearse and perform with members of Sandbox Percussion. Each student will be placed into a chamber group consisting of one member of Sandbox Percussion and fellow students. We rehearse throughout the week in preparation for a concert at National Sawdust in Brooklyn. We also invite guest composers and performers to talk about the careers they have developed for themselves over the years, and how they managed the transition from school to the professional world. This year, we’re very excited to invite composer Viet Cuong, along with percussionists Ji-Hye Jung, and Simon Boyar.

Now for some events. Today we head down to Washington, DC for three different performances and a masterclass. On May 2nd we will be featuring an intimate house concert in Georgetown as part of groupmuse. The program is titled Percussion on P Street and it is hosted by our good friend, Kathe Williamson. On this concert, we’re very excited to be giving the world premiere of the most virtuosic triangle piece we have ever played, may the devil take me by Amy Beth Kirsten. Who knew the triangle could be this difficult to play. Come and see! On Friday night we will perform at the Levine School of Music for their 2019 Composition week. Saturday morning we will have a public masterclass where we will perform new works by composition students at the Levine School. Our resident composers, Jonny and Victor, will discuss composition from a performers perspective and how composing music can be a positive reinforcement for a career that primarily consists of performing.
On Saturday night we will join Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez and the New Orchestra of Washington for a performance of Viet Cuong’s concerto, Re(new)al.
On May 14th, Sandbox joins up with composer Alyssa Weinberg and cellist Gabe Cabezas to present a new version of Alyssa’s work in the sand. We originally performed this piece in 2016 for LiveConnections in Philadelphia. This performance will be at Princeton University, on their Princeton Sound Kitchen series in Taplin Auditorium.
Finally, later this month we will be making our UK debut at the Vale of Glamorgan Festival in Wales. Our visit will include three separate performance engagements including a final evening performance where will will give the world premiere of a new piece by Ben Wallace for us and Dutch Street Organ. We will also be featuring repertoire by Amy Beth Kirsten, Andy Akiho, an oldie but a goodie by Charlie Peck, and music by Steve Reich and Viet Cuong.
