Steve Reich’s “Drumming” and May events

This Thursday, May 11th we will bring together an all star group of percussionists to perform Steve Reich’s seminal work, Drumming at House of Yes in Brooklyn, NY. Drumming was composed in 1971 after Steve Reich took a trip to Ghana to study West African drumming traditions. One of the things he was most inspired by during his trip was the overwhelming sense of community that was shared through drumming and music making in Ghana. He composed Drumming as a kind of reflection on that idea of community and how it could be depicted in a piece of music. We are so grateful to collaborate with Daisy Press and the whole production team at House of Yes to create our own little music making community for an evening. Also on the program will be Reich’s Music for Pieces of Wood and Electric Counterpoint featuring Daniel Lippel. Tickets and more information are here. We hope you can join us!

On May 23rd, along with the  Metropolis Ensemble, we will celebrate the music of Elliot Cole with a portrait concert at the new Metropolis Space in Lower Manhattan. We’ll play selections from Elliot’s book of bowed vibraphone PostludesTickets and more information are here.

Finally on May 29th from 1-3pm we will team up Yellow Barn’s travelling concert hall, Music Haul, on a program featuring various percussion quartets, duos and solos in Union Square.

That’s all for May. Stay tuned for some fun things happening next month!

Sincerely,

Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
