We’re returning from some time off in July to kick off our 2017-18 season with the second annual NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar. Sunday, July 30th, we welcome our #sandboxseminar17 participants with a faculty performance at Frederick Loewe Theater on the NYU campus at 8pm. This event is FREE and open to the public. So please drop in say hello, and meet this year’s NYU Sandbox Percussion participants!
Throughout the week participants from all over the world will study, rehearse, and perform 10 different percussion quartets all written in the past 5 years, with the exception of Steve Reich’s masterpiece, Drumming: Part 1 from 1971. Each quartet will include 3 participants and one member of Sandbox or fellow faculty member, Simon Boyar. A culminating concert will take place on August 5th at National Sawdust at 1:30pm. Two of these ensembles will be giving world premieres of works by NYU faculty member, Simon Boyar and NYU Sandbox Seminar alum, Nicholas Hall. This year our featured composer is long-time friend, Thomas Kotcheff. Many of his percussion works will be featured on the program, and he will be very active during the week coaching students, and giving masterclasses. Other guests will include composers Paola Prestini, and Dave Molk. We’re so excited to get the week started, and we hope you can join us for one of these events!
After the final show at National Sawdust we jump on a plane and head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a performance of Jerome Begin’s Wilderness along with the Brian Brooks Moving Company as part of Choregus Productions’ Summer Heat International Dance Festival. We workshopped and performed Wilderness in 2016 at the American Dance Institute (now Lumberyard based in Catskill, NY). It’s been a minute, but we’re excited to dust off those roto-toms! The performance is Sunday, August 6th at 8pm at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.
That should do it for now! Keep a lookout for more updates this season including performances on the west coast, a performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, and a total website makeover and rebranding.
Sincerely,
Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
