Max Roach at 100, Drumming at Peabody, and the end of 2024

Dear friends,

We’re still glowing after this week’s world premiere at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio, where we teamed up with the Tyshawn Sorey trio—Tyshawn Sorey (drums), Aaron Diehl (piano), and Harish Raghavan (bass)—celebrating the life and legacy of the late Max Roach. The evening unfolded as a continuous stream of music: the trio began with a set of Max Roach original tunes, followed by a few pieces featuring Sandbox before all seven of us joined forces to perform Tyshawn Sorey’s new 35-minute work, Cogitations. Inspired by Roach’s pioneering M’Boom ensemble, this piece was an honor to present.

We’re excited to bring this performance to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center tonight, and we’ll close out our tour at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on November 22.

On the 24th, we get to share the stage with our Peabody students for the first time. At 10am in Griswold Hall, we’ll present Steve Reich’s Drumming—a cornerstone of percussion repertoire. It’s a pleasure to share this meaningful piece with our new students and the Peabody community.

In December, we’re releasing the performance videos from our 2023-2024 Creator Mentorship Program. Wenbin Lyu and Iseul Kim created stunning new percussion works through this program, and we can’t wait to share the fruits of that process with you. Those videos will be released as a YouTube Premiere event on our YouTube channel, so stay tuned.

We’ll wrap up our 2024 performances on December 11th at The New School with the world premiere of Michael Torke’s evening-length work for percussion quartet, BLOOM. This is an absolutely gorgeous piece of music, but it’s also a heavy lift! We’ll take all the support we can get, so we hope you join us—please say hi if you do!

This season is off to a great start and there’s still more ahead. You can visit our website for more information on upcoming events, and we hope to see you next time we’re in your area!

As always, thanks for reading,

Ian, Jonny, Terry, and Victor
