This week we leave for our California tour! We’re super excited for this 2016-17 concert season and have some fun things planned. Running out to the west coast feels like the perfect way to kick it off. And not just for the sunny, warm beach days.
Before getting out to CA we’ll be making a stop in Lawrence, Kansas to visit the University of Kansas percussion and composition studios. Earlier this month was Steve Reich’s 80th birthday! We’ll be featuring a lot of his music (maybe more than usual) this season. To start us off will be a full performance of Drumming alongside the KU percussion studio followed by a runout performance and masterclass at Friends University.
Then off to California. Here’s how our timeline will look… San Diego –> Los Angeles –> San Jose –> Fresno –> Santa Cruz –> San Francisco –> Sacramento.
First up in San Diego on October 19th we’re performing on Fresh Sound Music at Bread and Salt. Featured on that show will be some favorites by Jonny Allen, Andy Akiho, Victor Caccese, Steve Reich, and Jason Treuting. After that we head to LA to perform on Ted Hearne’s music festival alongside Mellissa Hughes and Anne Lanzilotti on the 25th.
A few days later we will perform on Thomas Kotcheff’s Doctor of Musical Arts Degree Recital. Thomas has been a good friend of ours for years and wrote some of the first music we ever played as a quartet. We’re so honored to not only be performing on his recital but also giving the world premiere of his work not only that one but that & that too. This piece is seriously cool (just like him) and we can’t wait to show it to the world. We’re also performing with Thomas’ piano duo HOCKET and cellist, Christopher Ahn.
After Thomas’ recital we’ll be heading north to Sacramento and visiting some schools along the way. We’re performing and giving masterclasses at Chapman, UC Riverside, San Jose State University, California State University Fresno, UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco Conservatory, and UC Davis. And maybe stopping at Point Reyes??
Our last stop will be Sacramento for the Festival of New American Music. We’re performing a short set on the opening gala on November 5th as well as a full concert on the 6th in Capistrano Concert Hall. This concert is special as it will feature music by composers that have had a great amount of influence on us over the years. We’ll be playing music by all American composers Andy Akiho, Jonny Allen, Victor Caccese, David Crowell, Thomas Kotcheff, Steve Reich, and Jason Treuting. You can live stream this event right here. Jonny and Victor will be featured composers and talking about their music before the show. It is sure to be a memorable evening and we would love to see you there!
After that back home to NYC to try and catch a glimpse of some autumn leaves. We have more travelling planned this year than ever. Stay updated on snapchat! @sandboxperc
Happy fall,
Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
