NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar // End of Summer Events // Avaloch Farm Music Institue

Greetings! We hope you have been having a wonderful summer!

We’re kicking of our 2018-19 season next week with our 3rd annual NYU Sandbox Percussion Seminar. On Sunday, July 29th applicants from around the world will join us at NYU to study, rehearse, and perform some of today’s leading percussion chamber music. We’re kicking off the seminar with a faculty performance at NYU on Sunday at 8pm. We will be inviting guest composers Robert Honstein and Jason Treuting to coach and mentor students throughout the week. We will also be featuring works by Alex Weiser, Caroline Shaw, Judah Adashi, Jonathan Allen, Natalie Dietterich, Victor Caccese, and Steve Reich.  A cumulative concert with performances featuring all of the applicants will take place at National Sawdust on August 4th at 1:30pm. We hope to see you at one of these two shows!

Come enjoy the NYC skyline with some percussion music!  The day after our final seminar concert at National Sawdust, we will be performing a rooftop concert in Brooklyn with the Groupmuse concert series. Groupmuse is a social network that presents house concerts in an effort to connect classical musicians with new audiences in their community. We will perform music by Andy Akiho, Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese and more. On Wednesday the 8th we make a runout to Amagansett, Long Island to perform with the International Music Sessions educational program. We will be performing a double bill with harpist Edmar Castaneda at Stephen Talkhouse, and will feature works by Viet Cuong, Elliot Cole and others.

Finally, on August 12th we will be visiting Storm King Art Center in New Windsor, NY to give a performance of songbirdsongs by John Luther Adams as part of the Day of the Bird exhibition. This exhibition is centered around the artwork of Jenny Kendler and is a celebration of birds. There will be hands-on activities for all ages throughout the day including birdwatching, drawing live birds in an artist led workshop, and attending various readings and talks. Our performance will take place around 2pm. Joining us will be piccolo players, Fanny Wyrick-Flax, and Isabel Gleicher as well as percussionists, Adam Rosenblatt and Doug Perry.

As a busy couple weeks finally comes to a close we then head to the Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Avaloch is an artist retreat providing a unique opportunity to work intensely towards realizing and developing a new project or piece of music. Starting August 13th, for a month we will be at Avaloch workshopping and learning Andy Akiho’s epic new evening-length work for percussion quartet, Seven Pillars. Pillar IV is one of the completed movements and has been in our repertoire for awhile now. We’re so excited to make these final steps with Andy towards completing this massive new work. Keep an eye out for more on this soon!

That’s all for now. Check below for a full listing of these upcoming concerts. We hope to see you at one of the shows!

Sincerely,

Ian, Jonny, Terry, Victor
